Although Iz is doing well at work, things are beginning to fall apart with his relationship with Tammie. Her pain pill addiction has become a full-fledged opiate addiction, and he has started to withdraw, increasingly spending time on internet chat rooms as they both neglect their relationship. She notices that he is becoming “cold and quiet,” but she is so strung out on opiates that she cannot comprehend the extent to which their relationship has deteriorated. Iz starts sleeping on the couch as they drift further apart. He tries to break up with her in the summer of 2004, but she is in denial. When she refuses to move out of the house, Iz moves out with Sarah. He fixes up a house downtown and falls into a short affair with another member of the Makah tribe.

After dating a couple of girls in Neah Bay, Iz meets someone new on the online dating site, Match.com: 41-year-old Kimberly Anderson, a nurse practitioner living in Port Angeles.

Meanwhile, Tammie’s addiction continues unabated until she is involved in a serious car accident. Due to her inebriation at the time of the accident, she serves 25 days in jail in Neah Bay followed by seven weeks of mandatory treatment at a drug rehabilitation facility. After completing her rehab stint, Tammie begins seeing Iz again, under the guise of visiting Sarah. She and Iz become sexually involved again, a situation that continues off and on for the rest of the time he remains in Neah Bay. But while Tammie wants to get back together as a couple, Iz is not willing. Her drug addiction has done too much damage.

The two still talk openly with each other, including Iz telling her about his relationship with Kimberly. He tells Tammie that he is attracted to Kimberly because of her intelligence and independence, similar traits that had attracted him to Tammie. On the night of Sarah’s birthday, Iz tells Tammie that he has made plans to go to Port Angeles to see Kimberly. When he asks Tammie if she thinks that he should go, she tells him to do what he feels he needs to do. So he goes.

While Tammie tries to act unaffected by Iz’s relationship with Kimberly, inside it is eating at her. Increasingly consumed by jealousy, she leaves a note on Kim’s gold Accord in the parking lot of the Clinicare where she works in downtown Port Angeles. The note discloses that Iz and Tammie are still seeing each other.

Despite Tammie’s attempt at sabotaging Iz’s new relationship, when Kimberly lands a new job in Alaska, she invites him to move there with her. Since Sarah is involved, he has to file a relocation request with the court to take her with him, and Tammie opposes it. She thinks that doing so will make him change his mind about moving.

As expected, the court denies the relocation request, and a heated custody battle ensues. Eventually, Iz relents and agrees to give custody of Sarah to Tammie, an act that shocks her.
